Toyota and Lexus are set to replace approximately 100,000 engines in specific 2022 and 2023 Tundra trucks and LX SUVs. This extensive engine swap addresses a recall initiated in May, prompted by the discovery of machining debris left inside the engines during manufacturing.
Initially, when the recall was announced, Toyota had not yet devised a solution. However, by July 25, the company confirmed its straightforward fix: replacing the entire engine. The recall affects a total of 102,092 vehicles, including 98,568 Tundras and 3,524 LX600s. It’s important to note that this recall only applies to models with conventional gas engines, leaving hybrid versions unaffected.
By May 2024, Toyota had logged 824 engine warranty claims related to this issue.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with these engine problems. Owners of the affected vehicles will begin receiving notifications by the end of July. Those concerned about whether their vehicle is included in the recall can verify this information through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website or Toyota’s own recall tool.
This proactive step by Toyota and Lexus demonstrates their commitment to ensuring customer safety and vehicle reliability. Despite the scope of the recall, the decision to replace the engines at no cost to the owners highlights the companies’ dedication to maintaining trust and quality standards in their products.
